Artist’s statement:
This series of circular glass bowls are blown in layers of subtle and vibrant colours, thin opaque and thick transparent glass. The result is an investigation into the effect that precise colour and thickness of material play in the perception of volume. By applying opaque and transparent layers of glass both as solid masses and thin skins wrapped around thick masses, different spatial perceptions are experienced which invert the conventional understanding of the traditional glass bowl. Thus an infinite space can be seen in physically small volumes by the careful juxtaposition and treatment of cut and polished surfaces - some of the coloured interior volumes seem to float independently of their exteriors. This abstract quality cannot be understood from afar, the visual interest and complexity demand looking hard at close quarters and are best experienced directly where they can be touched and felt.
