| The ceramic works of Martin Bodilsen Kaldahl (1954) displays
a search for the experience of trancendence with their strong
focus on proportion and essence of form.
Kaldahl works on from a modernist tradition with a particular
interest in the relationship between form and ornament, which
he tries to rethink by constantly questioning the rôle
of ornament as a com-plicating factor in relation to form.
His approach is very precise and almost grammatical. At present
he is exploring the boundaries of the abstract narrative form
as in the works from the ‘Knotpot - series’ and
in the very new work that involves direct casts from nature
in conjunction with hand built forms of organic, yet architectonic
character. The exhibition will be presenting new pieces resulting
from these explorations.
Kaldahl first trained as a potter in the 1970ies. In 1988
he joined the Masters programme at the Royal College of Art
in London, where he graduated in 1990. His work has been exhibited
widely in Denmark and abroad and he is represented in many
public collections. Earlier this year he received the Sotheby
Award at the Collect Fair in London and his work is included
in the Victoria & Albert Museum Collection. He has been
teaching and lecturing part time for many years and has held
the post as Head of the Ceramics and Glass Department at Danmarks
Designskole, Copenhagen. He is now a research fellow at the
college.
