| Karen Bennicke (°1943) has already exhibited at PULS in 2001,
and now she is back for the second time. It is typical for
Bennicke's unpredictable creative mind that she will come
up with something completely new again. Whereas in 2001 her
ceramic objects were austere, unglazed sculptural light-projectors,
reminiscent of architectural scale-models, the present exhibition
will have a much more playful touch. She has created glazed,
coloured works (both standing and wall pieces) that are communicative
and seem to have a narrative of their own. Nevertheless, the
mystery is always lurking behind the corner, for it is never
quite clear what they are trying to communicate: Do they want
to make us smile, or are they messages from outer space? Either
way, her language of ceramics is intensely powerful and represents
a personal commentary on contemporary life. Through the interpretation
in clay of modern mechanical forms and by carefully juxtaposing
them in unexpected compositions, she has created a series
of objects that, despite their simple clarity, are always
complex and exhilirating.
Karen Bennicke had solo exhibitions in galleries throughout
Europe, participated in the big Danish exhibition "From
the Kilns of Denmark", which toured in the United States.
