Kaat Pauwels (°1968 in Gent , Belgium ) and educated at Sint-Lucas in Gent , where she was a student of Marnix Hoys and Rik Vandewege.

Pauwels constructs her sculptural works using the technique of coiling. Her pieces are built up layer upon layer from bottom to top, using clay rolls. During the build-up, a clay structure is added to these forms drawing a line pattern on the clay.
The point of departure are the basic forms, vases and bowl shapes that become recast. She uses clay in its pure form. The matter creates the expression, it is itself her motive, her hold.

For the series shown at Puls, Pauwels has chosen a light colour of clay. The skin is finished off with light earthen colours. The lines in the work create an extra shad o w, which makes the whole changeable and causes extra movement.

Even though this working method requires an advanced technical skill, the content will always come first and foremost.

In recent years Pauwels started using non-toxic materials. Not only out of an environmental concern, but also because this seemed more suitable for the kind of works that she was creating. Form and content are thus always engaged in an intensive dialogue, making this not only an aesthetic experience for the spectator, but also a deeply meaningful one.
